Front derailleur adjustment

I'm sue this is an old chestnut but I'm a newbie working on restoring an old MTB with Shimano Exage 300LX derailleurs. I'm having nightmares adjusting the front set. I've looked at umpteen videos etc but even when I manage to get the shift to all 3 cogs to work on test, as soon as I'm in the saddle it behaves completely differently. Anybody know of a good dummies step by step guide? I've been setting the L limit with the cable slack, then adjusting the cable tension on the middle cog before setting the H limit.
