New bike. Ultegra front derailleur. After first few rides had several instances of the chain being thrown beyond the largest chain ring onto the pedals. Before taking into LBS thought would try to adjust the high gear limit but having done that ran into problems with chain rubbing on right side of the front derailleur cage. So next tried trimming using barrel adjuster, however having done that then found could no longer shift down to smaller of the two chain rings.

Off to the LBS tomorrow to see how it should be done .

Any advice should I decide to have another go tonight?

It is a great idea to learn how to adjust yourself. Seems difficult at first, but easily learned.

It can be a bugger to get just right! but agree with Ian its well worth learning how to do it yourself. Not only do you save some money you actually see how even small adjustments to the limit screws have an effect on how the mech works.

On a 2 ring chainset the barrel shift is surely redundant as the end stops limit the shifter travel?
