My cheap bike needs a new front axle as the cone nuts are loose and will not tighten up and I have a wheel wobble when going at speed downhill. Now my bike has 26" wheels with 26x1.95 tyres all bog standard. Problem for me is I have no idea what size axle to get for it. Can anyone help with advice?

You will need to match the diameter and length of the axle to your current one. Probably 5/16" or 9mm but then I'm used working on ancient bikes so I'm not sure what size to expect on an MTB. Best measure it or take it to a bike shop. Longer is okay as it just means you will have extra thread sticking out on each side so doesn't really matter. Carefully compare the cones too to make sure they have the same taper.

There seems to be a trend for thicker locknuts nowadays which sometimes leaves axles slightly too wide to fit older forks but you will be able to spread it enough to fit anyway as it's only a small difference.

What do you mean the cone nuts are loose and will not tighten up ? Is the thread gone on them or will the locknuts not hold them tight (locknuts threads stripped?) ? Or is the thread on the axle stripped/damaged ?
