I have tried the freewheel removal tool I own on approx 5 different freewheels and so far it hasn't fit a single one! They are all different makes etc but not once has this tool proved its worth. I thought this would be a fairly universal size/fitting, can anyone enlighten me please.

There was no universal standard. Some more common ones are shown here.

The only type I've come across that isnt listed on the site linked to by RAFN is one for Maillard splined frewheels.
It even baffled several LBS I took it to, before finding one that still had the old, and now completely unobtainable, tool. Rocking horse droppings are more common than those freewheels though.

I still own a Shimano splined freewheel removal tool - and for anything else it's a quick trip to the LBS who will always take them off for free so long as the wheel is clean and has an inflated tyre on. I usually buy something else while I'm there though.

I had that with an old Raleigh i'm playing with...Maillard freewheel. 2 out of the last 3 cheap old racers ive been playing with have the Maillard F/W...i got a removal tool from my LBS. That said, i'm sure he's probably had it on the shelf a long time...and probably wont be replacing it anytime soon.

Ideally, put the punch/chisel/old screwdriver into the notches where the proper tool is supposed to go. If you don't have notches, make one with a chisel on the inside edge. Using the pin spanner holes in the lockring will work too as the lockring is usually a left hand thread so will tighten rather than unscrew but this will probably bugger up the freewheel so don't do it if you intend to re-use.

Freewheels don't have lockrings....
