To put some 'real life' results against a mathematical model I am constructing, all users of Cadence recording equipment who regularly ride 100 km or over, could you post a % value for the distance & time spent freewheeling.

Cheers.

Reason.
My local gym are planning a Sponsored Gym bike ride. They are confused as to the relationship between riding a gym bike continuously and riding a real bike on the road ( with freewheeling thrown in ).

I initially suggested 33% freewheeling, which would make 40 mins on a gym bike set to 'Random' equilalent to 1 hour on a 'Real bike'.

The calories bear it out in a short test. 500 kCals for 40 mins on the Gym bike for a not-so energetic session.

This is a chart of my cadence from January 2010 to the present day from WKO. As you can see it is around 16.5% where I am not turning the cranks. As for the actual distance and time spent, freeewheeling, I cannot see in WKO or Sportstracks at the moment, how to calculate it for a percentage of time and distance over a season for example, but I can find it out for individual rides. For example a very hilly 120 mile ride I did back in May in a total time of 7hrs 57mins, I free wheeled for 46.48 mins and a distance of 15.4 miles. Another ride on the flat of 86 miles which I did in 5hrs 5 mins, I free wheeled a distance of 2.69 miles with a time of 14.23 mins free wheeling. These figures are for a RPM of 0 - 1 rpm, but by the chart from WKO, I hardly pedal at all below 42rpm.

about time 15% "coasting" about 10% of the distance - and does it really matter - on the gym bike the target is the target - what is not the same is not the same

I collect cadence data via my Garmin 705 and download to the Garmin Connect software. How would I see what % of time I am coasting?

I've just had a quick check on the Garmin Connect software and I cannot see a way, but I may be wrong, likewise with the Garmin training centre, both have there limitations and cannot see any point uploading into Garmin connect and gave up a long time ago. All my downloads from my Edge 305 go into Sportstracks and also WKO were I can see more info and able to manipulate the charts to see what I want to see than the two previous mentioned programmes are able too.

I've been converting .tcx to .xml and importing into Excel.

I'm seperating out down gradients less than -2% and assuming I'm freewheeling down.

I'm also guestimating some freewheeling along the flat ( 0% +/- 2% ).

I must be too highly trained in energy conservation cus it comes to much higher than 16%.
