I would have thought it was a cassette if it has more than 7 gears then definitely

7 speed could be either, you need to have a good look at it and work out whats been fitted, unless you can find the tecnical documents for the bike.

Just for the record there are some 8sp freewheels.
yes but they are very rare - I think Sunrace are now the only people making 8-speed freewheels in the whole world, and I bet they don't sell many!

My Chimera had an 8 speed freewheel but that was when 8 or 9 speed was generally the standard, 10 speed may have just been coming in....I had no problem replacing mine, at that time. I found mine very durable, I think I replaced it at circa 6000miles.

I know its not relevent to OPs bike but like Nigel, just adding a little.
