Frayed gear cable

I need to re-insert the cable for the rear derailleur back in but the dam thing is frayed. Short of actually replacing the entire cable, what can I do about this? Cant get the wire back into the nut no matter how hard I try.

twist the end of the cable with pliers then dab a bit of superglue on to the end.

Can you not cut back to where it is not frayed? Alternatively if it is just one strand then unravel it right too the start and then cut it off.

If you haven't got a pair of cable snippers then put it on a block of wood and give it a whack with a hammer and chisel to make a clean cut.

What do ya know, your suggestion actually worked!

As for cutting the cable, it frayed too far back for me to cut it. It wouldnt have reached the bolt clamp if I did that. The cables a bit of a mess at the end but my gears are working great now. Cheers!

Suggestion .... Buy another cable and have it in the drawer ready. You'll probably be OK until you next need to get that one out but if it's badly frayed you'll have to replace it then.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Always leave cable overlong (but not silly!) to allow crimp to be cut off and still have enough length left to reuse cable. Of course if it is damaged where it was clamped that's different .....
