Hi

I'd like to have a go at building a frame one day.

I was just wondering how many of you have built a frame, and if you're an amateur and built it for yourself, how did it turn out?

Thanks, A

You can go on a course to learn the skills.

Dave Yates is the name to Google.

I built a bike buggy thing this was 10 years ago when I was 16. Just got a load of books and checked out the very few videos on YouTube at the time. Turned out OK and never broke down, or apart you just have to pay super attention to the welding.

Useful to gain some welding/brazing skills first...

I'm an engineer, and welding/brazing is a skill that only practice and regular performing will perfect. To do it good and do it right you must do it regular
Plenty of time for practicing if you decide to go on a Dave Yates course - fully booked for whole of 2016, dates for 2017 yet to be announced, but likely to be booked PDQ when they are. FWIW, I think he'd be an excellent teacher (he used to teach metalwork in a comprehensive for 3 years); he's interesting and approachable to talk to, and patient with fools to a remarkable degree.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
I had a do using one of the Ceeways kits.

It was stiff and straight; Went like a dream in a straight line, but I buggered about with the geometry a bit too much (because obviously I knew exactly what I was doing) so when I asked it to turn it would

turn

later.

It was an interesting exercise but quite time consuming to get right.

I'm a welder by trade. I did a seven year apprenticeship, Six of those included day release & evening class at college.

A different ball game now. City & Guilds is 12 x 2hrs evening class and that gives you an NVQ.

For those not in the know, NVQ stands for Not Very Qualified.

Too true. I served 4 year apprenticeship as a machinist then further 2 years fitting. Not sure if you can get an NVQ in machining but pretty sure you can

Thx all!

I'm an engineer as well but I've never done much welding. I probably will have a go eventually though...
