I am shortly going to have a ( Reynolds ) steel frame resprayed. The frame has a few rusty spots and I would rather tend to these and general pre-spraying prep. myself ( to perhaps save a bit on the shop cost ). What do I need to do ? How do I remove ALL old paint and any rust to have a blank canvas ( so to speak ). I feel ( maybe incorrectly ! ) that devoting time + detail to the preparation will produce a better end result ie I`d be happy to spend 2 weeks or so preparing to perfection and I`m sure the shop would not !
Ta for any replies.

as he says you'll be wasting your time. a good framebuilder/painter will start with abrasive blasting, anyone else just isn't worth considering, imho

Get it shot blasted, but make sure the shot they use isn't to coarse or it will dent the frame. As the others have said, it is the most thorough way

Agree that you should get it done professionally. The rust is usually removed using phosphoric acid. This converts the rust to iron phosphate which can be removed using water and to some extent the steel is left with a protective coating against further rust.

If you can find a powder coating company, they will have blasting kit on site.
