My current bike is an old Spesh Allez 58cm. A virtually new 08 spesh Tricross Sport 54cm is being sold locally by a fella who had second thoughts about using it as a commuter bike.

The Allez give me about 2cm standover top tube clearance as I have a 32 inch inside leg. Being 6ft 1 inch this means I have a longer body.

The Tricross is a hybrid (Tiagra + Deore LX, 700c, drop bars).

I intend to use it for flat trails eg (towpaths) as well as road.

I guess I need a smaller frame than the Allez, but I don't want to be badly hunched over in the drop position if the top tube is too short.

Any other 6 footers with this combo please advise.

a 54cm will almost certainly be too small for you

rule of thumb, for road bike, frame is:
1/3 of your height
or
10 inches subtrated from you trouse leg size

the frame size is measured centre of bb to centre of tope tube - you need to adjsut figures if frames with sloping top tube are measured differently.

for a mountain bike frame., subtract another 4 to 6 inches.
