Hello

My trusty Falcon Team Equipe singlespeed, 'Aryton,' is in dire need of a refurb. I've commuted through 4 winters and there's a lot of rust and peeling paint.

(apologies if you've seen this pic before).

I know Argos are nearby but I'm not sure I can justify £250 - £300. That said, it'd be nice to have everything aligned as well as the frame de-rusted, etch primed, coated etc etc.

Has anyone done anything similar recently, on a budget? Where's a good place to take it? Do people tend to use powder coat or enamel?

Is it worth just finding a local 'industrial coating' company to do the work?

Thanks

You can check frame alignment yourself quite easily. Sheldon tells you how.

If its all straight and correct then consider powder coating, which is cheap and durable.

That's a nice looking bike. If it was me, I'd spend the extra cash to get the decals redone, and the paintwork matched up. I used C&G finishes in liverpool when I redid mine, full enamel finish, they applied the decals and then applied clearcoats over the top. Nice job. Did cost £150 though, plus another £40 for the decals.

I used them in 1969 to do the paintwork on a BSA Gold Star, did a fantastic job,are they still off Upper Parliament Street.

They're on Smithdown Road, further down towards Aigburth, no idea if that is the original premises or not, but they've been there quite a while. They do everything from steel to carbon, and a fair amount of their business does seem to be bikes even now. There were at least 30 frames in the shop when I was there collecting mine.

If you do send it off for a respray, take some descent "before" photos for reference, close up, from all angles, esp showing details such as decals, headbadge.

I emailed a local company; they want:

£48 per hour to shotblast the frame,
£75 to powdercoat

This is plus VAT, and the finished product isn't guaranteed. Argos are looking more reasonable now! Will try some more companies...

If you are not too fussed about a top quality job just ring round your local shot blasters & powder coaters. I just had an old steel frame done, £15 for blasting & £20 for single colour powder coating :okay: it's not show standard, but for a winter hack / pub bike its good enough for me

...and I could always have a top quality job done when I'm old and rich!

Argos are brilliant mate, do your self a favour and pop in to see them and have a chat they don't bite (well they didn't bite me). The work is first class and cheaper than a lot of other frame builders.
