Frame Numbers

Just getting back into cycling and thought about frame numbers that were inscribed onto metal frames normally below bottom bracket to help identify you and your bike which could be registered with the police.May be silly question but how are carbon frames identified as surly marking frames would weaken the overall frame?

Marking by stamping postcode is no longer done. I use Smart Water to put that on. However, this does not prevent theft - it merely aids recovery in the event that the police actually find a stolen or abandoned bike. The frame number has not been used for years!

Both my bikes have frame numbers. One is steel, the other titanium, and both less than two years old. They're also marked with Smart Water, but I'm not sure how much of that is left after the repeated ride-clean cycle.
