but i suppose 'know how' is what i'm after.

i've got a '99 spesh rockhopper. i know it's old, but me and this bike are in perfect harmony. i really don't want another bike.

i've changed the forks to rockshox tora's, together with a deore xt front disc. originally, i had magura hydraluic rim brakes, but next to discs, these are a bit dated now.

anyway, i've still got the rim brakes on the back, and these are frankly inadequate.

i've been thinking of getting the rear of the frame modified to fit a disc brake mount. it's an alu frame. has anyone done this before? is it a silly idea? can anyone recommend someone who might deal with this kinda work?

cheers dudes

Don't know too much about MTBs but welding on aluminium, on a frame not designed to take aymmetric stresses of disc braking is probably not a good idea. It may be possible to do properly - but could well end up costing more than the whole bike is worth, by the time you've repainted it after welding.

Spend the money on some seriously good brake blocks instead. Kool Stop Salmons are usually thought to be about the best.

i wasn't really bothered how much it might cost (to a point obviously!), i've even found a standard rockhopper just like mine on flea-bay for 150 quid so obviously value has dropped in the last 11 years! (hmm, shall i get another?)

i'm not thinking what the bike will be 'worth' in the end; it's my ride and i'm just considering possible mods. thing is, i'm just so at home on the frame - she's just like a old comfy pair of trainers; not much to look at, but does the job, and i can certainly show up lots of riders who are on newer, shinier, 'better' bits of kit. i'm considering a repaint anyway...

that being said, i don't want to mash up the frame if it's not designed for rear discs and i appreciate your advice greatly. thought it might be a bit too much for the old girl. i'll look into sorting the rim brakes then. i'm gonna shop for some kool stop salmons...

thanks!!!
