Hi all,

Im about to up my training preparing for some more cycling this summer.

As ive never actually been fitted for a frame and dont understand enough about picking the correct frame size (well enough anyway), i would like to go somewhere for someone who knows their stuff to give me any advice, before seriously upping the mileage.

Im 6ft 2" and ride a 58cm frame, with 100mm straight stem. The ride feels comfortable, but feels its a good idea to get a second opinion.

Any advice for somewhere, ideally in london that can offer this service?

You need to post up a photo.

One of my bikes is just 43cm and the other is 57cm. Frame measurements without the angles don't really mean much.

58 sounds right for 6'2''
Ive just been through the whole 'getting comfortable' phase on my new bike as most will know... the main thing thats important is the reach/tt length. what is the TT length of that bike, centreof seatpost to centre of bars?

I'm the same height as you and i ride a 58ish bike. I like my bikes to ahve a toptube of 57-58 which fits me just right. 57 with 120 stem tbh.

lots of shops will do bikefits, but its just paying someone money to suggest either one or two sizes. whatever your size/shape etc you will only ever get suggested either 57 or 58 size toptube, and it could depend on their personal preference.

If the bike feels right then it probably is.

Years ago I got proffesionally fitted for a bike, they changed everything from how I had been used to having it. I left the shop on a test ride thinking this is never right. It took me several weeks before I addapted to my new position but they were right, the new position was better. It's hard to make changes as a new position will always feel strange and wrong.

To be honest the bike feels 'perfect' for me (although i have changed the handle bars and i prefer the wider 42cm bars).

I was more concerned about hitting 200 miles a week in the wrong riding position.

My other road bike (well track to be exact) is a 56cm dolan frame and feels completely different, however seems very comfortable. I also had an old raleigh with a 61cm frame, which fitted like a glove, all very confusing?!

that is 1 inch taller than me; 56 cm top tube is what I was recommended when measured up.

seat tube is 60 but that is with horizontal top tbue from cnetre of BB to top of seat tube - they are also measured to centre of top tube so that equates ot 58 cm frame).

you are more or less spot on with your frame- looking at the seat post, it appears to be set up correcly/

I have just had a 'revelation' moment.
When I bought my Pug, the LBS owner looked at me and told me I should have a 57cm frame. That was in the days when larger frames were the vogue. I was fifteen and he assessed I had an inch or so to grow.

My revelation is the memory of pieces of coloured tape on his office doorframe. I thought they were just odd bits of bartape that the mechanic had stuck there for decoration. Now, I realise they were his 'measuring system' with different colours for the various frame sizes available. Not only were they at head height, they were at crotch height as well, - in the same colour order from lowest to highest.

I was 5'7" and he reckoned I would grow to 5'8" -5'9", which I am now.

That was in the seventies. In the nineties I went to see about a custom frame. Three framebuilders measured me with a tape measure and asked me to stand over a complete bike in the showroom/front room. They were slightly different toptube and head angle, but all prescribed a seat tube length of 55cm with a 73.5 deg seat angle.

They could have taken my money but told me a 54cm -74/74 frame would do the business. The point was, I wasn't racing, and the longest I would be riding for in one bash would be three hours – at a slow pace.

The fitting sessions weren't a waste of money – Time spent in recognisance is never time wasted – as I then knew a 54cm OTP frame was fine, and my Spesh SWorks is a beaut.

Looking at the photo, that 58cm will 'do the business'. Others have already said 'fine' and so will I.
