A man has been jailed for four years after being found guilty of causing serious injury after a collision between his van, a car and a cyclist.

Stuart Hill, 39, a builder from Lippitts Hill, Loughton, was also found guilty of dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday following the collision on July 12 in Epping New Road in Loughton.

The cyclist, a woman in her 30s, was left with serious injuries after a Citroen Berlingo van driven by Mr Hill collided with her.

The judge, Anthony Goldstaub QC, said that the collision was the result of “shockingly aggressive, ruthless road rage”.

Judge Goldstaub also disqualified Mr Hill from driving for three years and ordered him to pay £120 to the victim.

Why isn't he given a lifetime driving ban? It's the only sensible response but our system doesn't do it. 4 years seems very lenient too, but better than is usually given.

Presumably she's taking a private case against him. It sounds a similar case to mine, my solicitor is claiming against the drivers insurers.

The report is not very well written.

The £120 is almost certainly the 'victim surcharge', which does not go to the victim and is no more than a stealth tax.

Anyone getting two years or more in the Crown Court, as this creature did, is ordered to pay £120.

I assume the ban of greater than one year is to make it as near impossible/expensive as possible for him to get insurance anytime in the next decade.

Unfortunately that probably doesn't mean he won't be driving, just not insured.

I believe the ban (now) starts on release. Quick google found this post in another place. So the answer is maybe, or possibly and hopefully.

You are quite right there. My ex husband was banned twice while I was with him (I didn't even know about the first ban) and his insurance quotes were astronomical. He used to pay the first installment, get the certificate and not pay any more installments. He used to drive all over the country with no insurance, and often no licence. I think that the RAF were very glad to see the back of him.

The guy looks scary! Poor lady having to suffer such a bad experience.
