Hello,

Is there a standard length for a fork that will be compatible with a 700C wheel and short drop (49mm) calliper?

I have been looking to buy a fork for this purpose and have been getting conflicting information from different bike shops - it may depend on the length being given either from calliper bolt to axle or from crown to axle; messages have not been very forthcoming or clear in any event.

The only seller that has their listing with full technical specs are an eBay listing for generic carbon forks and I am not confident in the product (full carbon at £60)

Can someone confirm the length for me, either crown to axle or calliper bolt to axle? I assume the later would be most relevant...

Cheers!

Caliper bolt centre to axle centre for a 39-49 mm short drop brake will be 311 mm + 39 to 49 mm - i.e. 350 - 360 mm.

That won't be exact because the centre of the rim brake track and bead seat aren't necessarily the same distance from the axle, and there's the fork rake and the caliper bolt projection in front of the fork crown to take account of, but it should be within a mm or so.

Great stuff, thanks for the reply.

That calculation makes sense. I found a set at 355mm, so your numbers would be spot on.

I was getting a bit confused as the shops that I had spoken to were vague and then dismissive, only suggesting I could return them, not ideal. There was conflicting assurances from shops about a set at 370mm. I appreciate you taking the time to answer
