Fork bungs

Anyone able to explain the role of fork bungs, and their relationship to headsets, to me?

I have tried google but cannae find anything

Bungs or star fangled nuts just draw the steerer up so that the forks are tightened up to the bearings in the headset- which I'm sure you know..

Bungs are used with carbon steerers instead of star fangled nuts as the inner diameter is less and they don't damage the carbon.
