i posted this thread in Reviews but thought i'd whack a link in beginners, as people are always asking for ideas for entry level road bikes.

my brother has settled on the Boardman Team at £645 but there are two lower models and from what i remember from the book, the spec on the next model down is Shimano 105 so pretty good bikes for the money. Worth taking a trip to Halfords to have a look.

I have a Boardman Comp which I aquired 2nd hand and have to say its the nuts. Coming from an MTB then Hybrid it is the stuff.

In fairness if you want to spend more money you can buy better, for instance a mate of mine has a Trek 1.9 with Ultegra and it rides sweet, better than the Boardman. Only problem is its double the price.

Entry level bike?

Boardman:becool:

he can't afford more, he's stretching at £645, so i reckons its the mutts nutts for the money. we discussed the comp, as i said the 105 was a good groupset, but he had actually seen the Team so went with that.

Something that could be afforded by a Beginner, who may not wish to spend 1k+ on a bike (particularly if they are not certain they will take to cycling)?

Entry level road bikes would cost from £300 - £600 roughly...
But I'm sure you know this already ;)

*prepares to get shot down in flames by folks saying that anything under a grand is entry level or the other folks who think you can get them for 200 quid*

The Boardman Team? For £645? Really?? I'm in very similar position to your brother in terms of budget and looking at the Halfords website, the Boardman Team seems to be going for £800. Is this the bike you're talking about:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_501955_langId_-1_categoryId_165710

The only Boardman bike I can find for that sort of price is the Comp:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_501991_langId_-1_categoryId_165710

If you really can get the Team version for £645 then please let me know and I'll be there like a shot to get one too!!! (Who knows...maybe we'd get a discount if we ordered 2!!)

I got myself a shiny new Raleigh AirLite 300 from my LBS last week for £359.99. Seems to have been a good price from what i have seen since on the prices. First new bike in about 22 years, so old one doesn't owe me anything. Just now need to get used to it.
