This is one I've been keeping an eye on. Son no. 2 uses this road a lot and anyone turning right out of the junction needs to stop and look. There's red paint and lines over the centre of the road but visibility is good if you stop.

Sadly, the driver did not and a life was lost plus the driver has been jailed - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm24r3lgjr9o

I know that road, I have a route that comes down it into Horbury Bridge and I'm always very conscious of other vehicles turning across me.

Sentencing Council guidelines say the offence carries punishment of anything from a community order to up to four years in prison, depending on the circumstances of the case. So less than half of the maximum sentence, and only a 12 month driving ban. Disgusting.

It says he admitted it, which I think reduces a sentence by up to a third depending on when he pled guilty, but today's report says he didn't do so at the first opportunity, so I expect it would have been less. However, the victim's wife did ask for him not to be imprisoned.

Does anyone know if the highway authority plans to improve that junction to catch bad drivers and reduce the risk of a repeat?

I don't agree with asking for people not be jailed, especially in cases like this, but I'm not the wife of the deceased so I suppose its not down to me.

But I got the road wrong, its here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pjWSQZZAXE68TCga8 . The driver was turing right out of crossland factory lane.

Bit more info here stating although he got 14 months, but will be released on licence after half so its even less of a sentence: https://fanbanter.co.uk/mansfield-r...on-sentence-for-causing-the-death-of-cyclist/

Is this the junction? Would a cyclist have a clear view of traffic coming up the side lane?

What price a life? Not much it seems according to the rubbish of a law.

I sometimes cycle that road as it’s local to me. It’s not a good junction when joining the main road more due to speed of traffic but the view of traffic approaching from the right is good, the left not so easy. It sounds like he didn‘t stop and look - if he had, he would have seen the cyclist IMO As he was travelling from the right, towards Meltham.

The crash was recorded on the cyclists camera so that is likely why he changed his plea - when he realised the evidence against him was irrefutable.

People seem to look for vehicles and not people on bikes. The original reason I got a camera was in case I was incapacitated.

It looks like a horrible junction to turn right out of, due to the angle of the road and the hill.

The view of traffic coming from the left is awful. You would be looking over your shoulder at 7 o’clock, and lots of cars have blind spots.

I have a similar junction near me which I hate driving out of, as I know I can’t see the entire road.
