Foot curl \ cramp

A few weeks ago my right foot felt like I had broken or seriously bruised the long outer bone (metatarsal), but rest and gentle excercise and the pain went away.

This week I have been experiencing a kind of cramp sensation in that foot, like the right foot is cramping and wants to curl up along its long axis. I haven't hit it or bruised it in a few weeks so think that my cycling is to blame.

I am contemplating swapping my SPD's for flat pedals for a week or so to try and pin down the issue, but wondered if anyone has experienced similiar problems due to cleat setup? Mine have been the same for 6mnths and this is a recent thing...

sounds like your cleats are in the wrong position, i had the same issue but after moving my cleats it has been resolved.

Had a similar issue, just on one foot, which affected not only the foot but my lower calf as well. The foot in question has a slight splay and the more time I spent out of the saddle the worse my problem was. I switched from SPDs to speedplay (free float) and the problem is more or less eliminated (I can even spend a lot of time out of the saddle with little problem).

Hope moving the cleat fixes your problem, but if not it might be worth looking at free-floating cleats.

Have a read up about Specialized BG footbeds and wedges. They incorporate a metatarsal wedge, which is supposed to help push the bones of your foot into the correct posture. They have certainly improved my foot comfort.

I use both Speedplay (X) and Specialized shoes. Made a big dif for me. Speedplay also offers an adapter plate (only company I know that does) to get cleats even further back on the shoe.

Hmm, have adjusted my right cleat three times now and yet have still been suffering cramp in that foot. Even happened over Christmas when I didn't ride for over a week.

My mother tells me that she and her brother suffer from the same occasionally and I should see a doctor. She won't tell me why though - why do women do that?

You could have developed a weakness in the small muscles of the foot, which is now revealed - but not caused - by cycling. I occasionally get that if I haven't been running for a while.

I cure it by strengthening the muscles with heel dips on the stairs. http://www.systonfootcare.co.uk/footexercises.php I do those one leg at a time, but with both legs, otherwise I get it when I run.
