"Aha!" I thought this morning, as my eyes landed on the waterproof ski trousers I have for sailing. "Why bother with my Altura Night Vision waterproof overtrousers and some lycra leggings, why not just wear the ski trousers to keep the rain off!"

I took my car to the local garage for the MOT and then began to cycle back.

Within about 2 minutes the lovely cool lining of the ski trousers was sweaty and sticky. Within about 5 minutes I was seriously overheating. I had to cycle back VERY slowly and was red as a beacon when I got home.

Next time I'll stick with the proper cycling gear.

Heh, I don't ski. Skiing trousers are for sailing.

One would think with all these different sports needing basically the same stuff (waterproof and windproof equipment) that you could use the same clothing for each. I tried this theory out - and failed.

However I do wear my cycling leggings under sailing oilies when sailing and they keep me warm so there's one double-usage item of clothing!

This is a science trying to remain dry yet not sweat/overheat.

When it's raining I only wear a jersey and rainjacket, and a pair or shorts and water proof trousers. Allow the body working to keep me warm and the waterproofs to keep me dry. If I start to cook, I just pull me trousers up, literally!
Why bother with the trousers, though? I used to wear over-trousers but found them so clammy and unnecessary.

I agree, just keep your trunk dry. Leave your legs to the elements. They are either wet from sweat or wet from the rain. Wet from the rain is just a nicer feel.

My clothing mistake today was wearing my better waterproof, expecting heavy rain. Its coloured black so I decided to wear a hi vis gillet on top. By the time I got to the office it was Chicken Chop Suey (boil in the bag)
PS the rain never really came to owt :blush:

Ski trousers for sailing - two totally different sports, I have two totally different lots of gear. I would never think of cycling in my skiing gear - too bulky for cycling and too hot for our weather. Thin layers is the way to go.

Thats very true I find the only reason I need to cover my legs is due to the cold! That's when it get's down below 4 degrees C.

I did try my sailing Jacket the other day, but that was on avery slow ride with my son on the back! Still regreted it tho when the sun came out!

Ah, but the ski trousers were a Lidl special offer which I thought would be just right for sailing - and they have been. My husband bought the Lidl snowboarding trousers which have a foam knee protector which is brilliant for him when he's kneeling to haul up the anchor. We've got some Lidl sailing gear too, but the ski trousers have worked excellently for us. But not for cycling!
