Hi,

I am riding 35 miles for charity in July and was wondering what do you eat in order to maintain the correct energy levels?


I'd have a decent meal about 2hrs before the cycle then maybe a banana or nutri-bar during it.

the rule of 40-30-30 is always the best for me...

a little piece of parmesan cheese, 1 fruit and 3 nuts or one 40-30-30 nutrition bar :tongue: if are on the bike

During or after a ride of that length I will usually have cake and coffee at least once, maybe twice, before the 35 mile mark. More then twice makes it a really good 35 mile ride!:biggrin:

eat/ drink well before hand (I've taken to upping my water intake slightly for a day or so before a longer ride), take plenty of drink with you and I always take a banana and a fruit & nut type bar for eats...maybe a chocolate bar as well...for back up!

As per your other thread. Nutrition is only a precaution for 35 miles.

Jelly babies are nice for a quick top-up on longer rides.

I think technically at that stage, it becomes a tour.... ;)

Porridge or toast for breakfast. Carry some snack food you can easily eat along the way. I like chocolate raisins. If I were riding that distance, I'd probably want a cafe stop for tea and cake, if that's not practical, carry something more substantial, like a sandwich. Have some muesli bars or flapjacks in reserve too.

A lot depends on how long you expect to take. For some, that's a couple of hours of high intensity effort, for others it's an all day pootle. The longer you're going to take, I think, the more you need to think about 'meals', as opposed to bloodsugar sustaining snacks.

Drink plenty of water, or dilute squash (which can be more refreshing, and I think gives a psychological boost due to sweetness.)

I usually take some sort of sweets with me - jelly babies or wine gums or something, that usually does for shorter rides of 30-35 miles or so. Have also taken an oaty bisuicty thing and yoghurt covered dried fruit as well. I'm doing a 65 miler in three weeks, and expect it to take me about 6-7 hours (pthbbbth) so i'm going to take banana and other such 'food' rather than 'snack' items with me.

Stomach, but via the mouth, not the other way. Definitely not the lungs.

More practically, back pocket of brand new cycling jersey that you bought for the occasion.
