I keep wearing out bits on my old bike and so my wife has insisted that I need a new one. The local shop has Focus bikes in (amongst others). While I could get the same bike cheaper elsewhere, they do include a bike fit and few little extras. The FCE-3.0 is about the right price point. I did ask the other day and it seems they didn't have one that I could try which rather reduces the "buy local" attraction. So now I'm in a quandary. I cant afford to pay over the odds for a bike but I do feel that I should be able to ride, what is for me, an expensive bike before deciding.

What would the cognoscenti here say? Does a test ride tell you much?

After all I'm only car ride from Planet X, Evans etc etc etc.

A test ride can tell you a lot about what the riding position is really like when you are moving and how responsive it is.

I have now ordered 2 bikes without a test ride and they been spot on. I honestly believe this is lucky in some part, but also as a result of doing a lot of review and forum research before ordering.

Different circumstances each time, but would definitely have ordered locally and test ridden if the option had been viable.

So, I certainly wouldn't get put off from ordering without a ride if it's absolutely not possible.
