Fixing panniers to rack, already lost attachment - am I doing it wrong?

I very recently bought some panniers and all is going great apart from one thing. They have two hooks at the top which clip over and fix them so they can't fly off upwards and then a lower bar with a sliding clip which fixes on the bottom of the rack to stop them flapping about. Now, I've lost the bottom attachment (after just a few rides). Looking at the remaining pannier, I can slide the attachment off the bar, there is a screw but tightening it does not seem to make any difference, I can still pull it off the plastic strip. Have I been unlucky, am I doing it wrong or are these just rubbish? Any input appreciated!

Thank you! I'm so used to getting a detailed instruction booklet for even simple things that I wasn't expecting to have to do anything to set them up. Now I just need to find another clip (or locate my lost one on the route into work tomorrow)...

I agree with Mr Paul, I've just treat myself to the same panniers and it's more than likely as he describes.

Are you using both all the time? If just using one most of the time you could borrow the spare one for the time being. I don't know if they can be bought as replacement parts - Rixen and Kaul is the make of the fittings.

I have the cheap-ish Canyon panniers that Argos and such sell (my work used to sell them so i got some cheap). Clips were poor and eventually gave up, turned out that they were a cheap copy of Ortleibs - the O's replacement fitting kit attached straight on and gave me some pretty decent panniers

I just lost one on its first outing too! Could have sworn that it was on tight. Its certainly not as secure/reassuring as the Vaude ones I just replaced.

I have these.

They are great, and just as described, need tightened up.
Mine and my friends tightened up fine.

Once you have tightened them with a screw driver, just test they dont slide! to make sure.

Lucky you can buy spared for a few quid.

Buy cheap panniers - you get what you pay for.

eh?

This is to do with not fastening the clip on properly, not how well they are made.

Please do. I e-mailed them this morning and they helpfully pointed to the item on their web site!

Surely 3 of us can't be doing it wrong?

They'll only cost EBC pence to post, they will be better long term than my suggestion I'm certain so if you can negotiate on the postage then go for it.

I'm not touting for work but can make half a dozen of these next week in a probably slightly weaker material to test some free stuff. Stick a couple of quid in a charity box and pm your address. Ta .

Ah but you're expecting Crankarm to actually read the post...

TBH, having that retaining hook is good, but if the worst comes to the worst, not having it will only lead to the pannier rattling a bit on rough surfaces, as the top hooks should hold it securely to the rack. It shouldn't bounce off. I have a pannier with the same sort of hook, and sometimes have to carry it on the other side to normal, and then the bottom hook doesn't have an upright to engage properly with, and I've never worried about losing the pannier.

Still, if Longers can oblige...

Well I've tightened up the remaining screw and to be honest it's still a bit loose. Next time I'm passing the shop I'll certainly go in and mention it, especially know I know it's not only me.
I'm now onto the next dilemma (somewhat more serious), some git tried to nick my bike Thurs night, luckily didn't manage it, got into the shed, realised only my old bike was in there and then had a go at the kitchen window (presumably could see it in there). It's not been my week!

I'm ex Ebc staff when they started making these we did the fill with water test and no problems there didnt leak at all on the clip side of things I never saw a problem apart from when folk hadnt set up the clip spacing according to their rack rails. Making sure the on set up for left stays left and so on really helps too, obviously depending on the racks construction
