thaks further you are completely right. i went ahead and swapped over whilst waiting for a reply and they slotted in like they were meant to be there. photo below for your enjoyment )) what do you think? the lights low, but they improve the look of the bike.

I've gone 30 speed on my old Raleigh with modern 130mm OLN wheels, although mine was originally 6 speed block with 126mm OLN so I didn't have to cold set the frame as much, if your on 120mm OLN it was a 5 speed block

thanks dave. my raleigh is 7 speed. whats OLN mean? i did get the vernier gauge out and it read 1 cm over on the outside of the frame, but i measured the inside and it came up a few mil short of the size of the scr1 frame which is where the wheelset came from. i think i just miscalculated the outside width because i didnt take the wheel of to measure.

Over lock nut, on the axle outside of the nut to outside of the other nut, basically the measurement of the gap if you measure inside the frame not outside

it would have been a 6 speed, that Raleigh frame design came in in 1989 with internal rear brake cable routing, and unicrown fork
