Looking at buying an early 80's frame and the rear spacing is 122 mm,
are there any modern hubs,i.e.that will take a cassette rather than a screw on freewheel
that will fit or can be made to fit?

With that spacing you would be looking at 5 speed or a track hub, though neither would be a cassette hub...

Just spread the rear to 130mm if it's a steel frame then the world is your oyster with modern wheels.

The easiest way I found to spread the rear is an old scissor jack for cars. Piece of wood to protect the metal on each leg and then position the jack and slowly turn the handle. You get equal force on each side and its much easier than Sheldons faffing with string and planks.
My LBS just does it by hand. Doesn't seem too accurate to me though.

looks like early shimano 105 hubs are around 125-126
reckon I should be able get one of those to fit with a bit of tweaking. There,s a few NOS hubs on the bay at reasonable prices
