Fitting front guards to a disc equipped bike?

Hi,

I have a new pompetamine and i was trying to fit some SKS chromoplastics to it today, the front stays foul the brake caliper.

I tried using a longer bolt like in the picture, i could fill this out with spacers or washers but it then skews the mudguard to a strange angle.

How else could i fit these guards?

There are no mounts for front forks that i could try to attach them to either

If i try to bed them around the caliper, or use any other way that causes the stay to bend should i fix them without the secu clips incase it causes them to pop out all the time?

That doesn't look nice. Two options, 1) large 'P' clips secured half way up the fork 2) put a bend in the stay so it goes under the brake caliper (leave plenty of room so it doesn't interfer with the caliper) then up to the fitting on the guard. Either way I'd avoid using the long bolt solution.

Thanks,

How sturdy is your fitting Gaz? i was thinking of bending them either like that or out and around the caliper. Does your interfere with the caliper at all?

What way would P clips work? never really heard of them

It's very sturdy. Bending is the best option in my opinion, a few people here have the pompetamine. Try searching for it and i think there is a long thread about what people have done to get it to work.

P-clip around the fork just above the caliper mount. The stays will need to be cut down substantially and may need to be bent slightly to approach the mudguard at the correct angle. They won't be in symmetry with the other side, but it's the cleanest way.

This problem convinced me that it would be easier to buy a bike with V-brakes so that's what I did.

However, I didn't know at the time (but I do now) that you can buy mudguards with stays designed for bikes with disc brakes. So a simple solution would be to buy disc specific mudguards.

I like the way people have offered a number of solutions without stating this obvious and best way to solve your problem. I guess previous posts have focussed on a solution using your current mudguards.

PS nice clean floor

I'd recommend Gaz's way of bending the stays. I've bent stays round my callipers and they're as sturdy as the unbent sides, it means you can get the angle dead-on. You may need to do a similar bend at the other end of the stays in order to enter the plastic clips at the correct angles.

You may also want to consider SKS Commuter guards. Their stays may need bending too but not to such s greater extent.

Example P clip here

I'd put bend in the way Gaz has done. Go under the brake not around the outside - you'll regret outside when you need to service the brake. Also you've a limited length of stay so need to keep the route as direct as possible. Same trick works on the rear too.
