fitting a 10 speed cassette

I'm (not @Andrew_Culture, but @dktd) trying to fit a 10 speed cassette - Shimano 105, and the lockring just about locks on - but not very deep, and not amazingly securely. Someone on bikeforum says that, that's the deal (http://www.bikeforums.net/bicycle-mechanics/263170-10-speed-cassette-8-speed-hub.html) - the skewer keeps it on, too?

Is this normal? Is this how it should be - just barely fitting?
Is there a longer lockring to fit?

They actually said that the lockring tool only just fits and the QR skewer would be used to hold that in place.

Are you using a spacer and if so, what thickness is it?

just the 105 spacers that came with it, and 1 older 105 - all measuring 2.2mm thick.

Broadly how many revolutions did you turn the lockring?

We went to go see our local legendary bike doctor who furnished us with some thinner spacers for the spoke-side of the cassette

If the 8sp lockring is deeper use that, I have converted from 7-8sp, I ended up using a small toothed cogs i.e. 13th as a spacer on the spoke size as the spacer I got was to thick when it was 7sp on some RS10 wheels, 8sp fitted fine, I now have 9sp on RS11's these require a spacer (again spoke side) supplied with the wheels as its 10-11sp.

Any hints for indexing? The gears all snap along nicely but we can't get it onto the two biggest cogs?

It was a 1mm spacer on (instead of 2.2mm) behind the cassette and that gave us more play on the lock-ring side so we could properly screw it down.

Daft I know, but you adjusted the h-l stops, and tensioned the cable with the shifter in the highest gear position and pulled tight, barrel adjuster at some mid point.

A 10 sp rear sprocket is 1.6mm 9 is 1.78mm 8sp is 1.8 mm (so you can really interchange these if you want) 7sp are 1.85mm, I have used these with an 8sp, so if you have any of these on a small tooth count these can be used as spacers, not very elegant but they will work as spacers.
