Does anyone else find that their fitness improves in the spring? Must be down to the increased daylight cycling (which is always easier), warmer weather, and I change to thinner tyres in summer. But by summer, I feel much fitter than in the cold depths of winter ......^_^

Because winter is crap and means less getting out and about. This is bound to have an impact on fitness.

I find during the winter commute my leg muscles never really warm up properly, but the last few days with this warm weather they are feeling more powerful and warmed up ^_^

I actually don't change mileage or frequency between summer and winter, still the same routes, etc.... but the times are better in fair weather, and my legs feel better despite the increase in speed.

Bigger and more flappy clothes, possibly a heavier bike and additional kit to haul with mudguards, etc. Air density is different, I believe? You will go faster in warmish dry weather, because of these things alone. Fitness is going to improve during Spring & Summer, if you cycle less in the Winter, of course
