I competed im my first ever 10 mile tt last night at cirencester. I rolled uo at 5.55 went in to the cricket club where everyone signs on joined the club and signed on all for the pricely sum of 15 quid now the entry will only be 3 quid bargain. I picked number 17 which meant I startd at 7.17 so at 6.45 I rode the 4 miles to the start line watched to see how it all works. Most outhers where warming up by riding up the road behind the start line so with a few mins before my start time i ride up the road and get back to the start line as number 16 is just about to go. He is on his way and I pull up next to the starters the guy with the stop watch anounces 30 seconds the other guy takes hold of my bike I clip in what a stange feeling next I hear 5,4,3,2,go I stand up and try to put asmuch power down as I can I get up to 25 fairly quick its only a shortish distance about half a mile til the first roundabout the slight climb up to it knocks my speed down to around 18 mph the marshals were on the island clapping and shouting support which I thought was fantastic thanks guys : ) after about 3 miles the first of many pass me I am holding 20 to 23 and struggling to breath note to self must get alot fitter. I notice I am catching number 15 as he has rounded the island I am approaching which spurs me on no end but I fail to catch him before the finnish. I ended up with a time of 30.58 which I am well chuffed with as at 46 yrs of age and only been regularly riding since mid feb and was 18 stone totaly unfit. Roll on next week and see what can be done : ) the guy and gals were so freindly and supportive I would like to say a big thank you to all the corinium and swindon road riders you help make my first tt a special one

Awesome! Won't be long until you get that magic sub 30 - nearly making a catch on your first TT as well!

Good stuff. Should see some pretty rapid improvement as you ride more and get the hang of pacing and pick up a bit more fitness.

Great news, I know it is hard but try starting less aggressively as once you get into oxygen debt it is hard to get back out.

Thank you for the encouragement
And the advice is taken on board
I have just purchased a Giant TCR Ally frame Carbon forks with 105 groupset as I believe my £250 Claude butler is well embarrasing to be seen with but will be a fantasic training bike
I will be adding to my list of TT goodies as pay packet allows TT hemet, over shoes,Aero bars I dont know how I will get on with the bars as I have 2 slipped discs and leaning over can be uncomfortable plus seems to stop me breathing which whilst cycling seems prety important

This report reminds me of our motorbike racing reports, just a bit slower! That is a good time, and you'll bust the magic 30 mins soon

I've done 2 TTs this year and just entered an Open event in a couple of weeks time. I'll have to try and get down to Cirencester one night and do a TT with you. Is Gems doing them as well?

Just bought a second hand, old TT bike - will put a separate post up.

Cheers mate, It will be good to see you and great if you can do a TT with us
Gems has not started doing TTs but is getting out with me training on her MTB and she goes very well on it but she is looking for a road bike and I hope she will get the courage to go out and do some TTs.

I did my second TT last night the first on my new/second hand bike even though the seat came loose at arounf 5 miles and allmost losing it for the last mile I did a 29.18 which I am well chuffed with

Well done mate!

And thanks for sharing this, I am interested in trying out TTs - how do you get started, and where do you find out about where teh TT's are being held and when?

Might be worth looking at your local triathlon club website too. They often do time trials on 20k courses - 12 miles or there abouts. In the northeast Sun City Tri holds an event on Wednesday nights and a some pure cyclists turn up too.

You'll find a wider range of abilities at these events because some of these people are good swimmers or runners which doesn't matter on a bike !

Taking the step to go and participate in a TT is difficult, as there is the old 'am I way too slow' doubts in the head. I finally opted for a 20 mile TT last week, what the heck, it's just participation and competing against yourself really. I was happy to come in well under the hour mark, and it gives me a target for the next time.

In addition to open events (most of those on the CTT site) also check the websites (and, increasingly, Facebook pages) of local clubs- they'll often have evening time trials (10s in most cases although some will do odd distances) or sometimes 25s or other distances at the weekends- turn up and enter on the line usually, you will be expected to join after one or two events.

Because of the 'cross reports I figured you were probably a member of a club already (perhaps you are, but they don't organize TTs). Generally once you are a member of one club you can just show up and ride at other evening time trials- certainly members of other clubs turn up at ours (regular riders from other clubs even get roped in to help with marshalling etc.) and I've showed up at event run by other local clubs just for the novelty of a different course.
