Don't look down. just feel for them. Don't panic if you can't clip first time in as you can still pedal when not.
It won't take long to get used to them.

You needed to have practised clipping in and out several times whilst leaning against a wall or similar first.
This makes sure you can both unclip and re-clip easily. It'll also tell you if you have slackened the tension off enough or if it needs backing off a little more.

Do you have the pedals turned to the loosest setting?

Which pedals are you using? Perhaps get some double sided ones? You can still turn the pedals if only one foot clipped - assume you aren't unclipping both when stopped?

Why do people end up unclipping their right foot when that's the one that will be on the ground in the way of traffic when stopped? I am right handed but always unclip the left to put on ground / pavement out of harm's way!

I'm a right footer and never found it a problem in the traffic.

I think it would only be a problem if you were unclipping and then trying to signal with your right leg

What about when you are at lights and have foot on floor, some cars can get ridiculously close? I can't trackstand!

Of course in France, you are on the wrong side of the road so the issue may arise if a left unclipper ;)

I only6 unclip my left foot however as far as I can see from a safety point of view I should unclip either both or my right foot because if I lose my balance and my right foot is clipped in I will fall to the right into traffic where if I only unclipped my right foot I would fall to the kurb.
