First time out on a road bike.

First time out ever on a road bike and it felt really good to be honest. I done ten miles to start off but afterwards I still had plenty of gas in the tank; but saying that, my back was pretty sore afterwards, you really do feel every bump on the road. I think I'll try fifteen or twenty miles tomorrow.

Nothing quite like it, eh? It'll take a while for you body to adjust to the new position. What have you got - pics?

I know the feeling about your back, my back was aching after two 10 miles (Separated by a few hours break), but it seems fine now (this was yesterday), the first time I rode my first 10 miles my back was aching for about a week (I'm really inflexible :3). But yeah, you really do feel absolutely every bump, I realise how rubbish the roads around my area are now, what I find helps is when you can see the road is gonna get a bit rough stand up and let your legs and arms take the shock (Of course keeping your knees and arms bent), not necessarily so much that you're up in the air, but just so your rear is off the seat.

my first time on a road bike was when I was a kid on a rusty old thing that couldnt change gears properly. I remember thinking how much faster I could go for the same amount of effort. It wasnt untill I actually purchased one years later I went much further than my local streets tho. Cant say I ever had any problems with the position reguardless of distance, even when I fist tried it. Now I cant stand riding non road bikes on the road, I feel so slow and useless on a mountain bike. That changes when im actually mountain biking or off road ofcourse.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I've just done my first 10 miles on a road bike tonight. I absolutely loved it and flew round a local circuit much faster than I usually do on my MTB. My arms are aching now and I've got a blister on my left-hand, but I'm not sure whether that's from the ride or from spending ages pumping up the tyres. I found it really difficult inflating using a presta valve, and could only get them up to 70psi, rather than the recommended 100psi. Any tips anyone?

What type of pump are you using. Some are just not upto the job of pumping up roadbike tyres.

It's one of these:

I didn't end up getting the Viking. I found a barely ridden Carrera Virtuoso for £240.

You ideally need a track pump -it's then easy to get to the higher pressures.

Boydie- I would have a play with your tyre pressures. Try letting a bit of air out and see if that improves the comfort without feeling too sluggish.

Semi road bike newbie decathlon has some cheap good track pumps. Also got c02 pump from Halfrauds for when I am out on the road
