Hi am doing my first sportive next Sunday and would appreciate any advise. I am going down on my own but would like to ride with a group, what is the etiquette before the off? Any other tips will be much appreciated.

I'd say that there is no etiquette in sportives - the diversity of rider is too great.

Groups may form from people who already know each other or have never met before - just talk to people, they are usually pretty relaxed arrangements.

My tip is enjoy yourself and have fun.

Hi Ian. I have only done a couple and found that you naturally form a group with riders doing the same speed as you, if you get dropped by one group another will be along shortly.

I think the only real etiquette is dont knock anyone off their bike. Riders will be very close to you at times and late starters may pass you at great speed so try to keep to your line.

Eat and drink plenty and dont set off too quick .

I was riding with a couple of mates in the Manchester 100 today, we were passed by a fastish group of about a dozen, some with club jerseys, I forget which, but blue and yellow. ( Bit of research shows me it was Seamons CC)
We hung on to them for about 20 miles until halfway at a brisk pace, 20 mph plus. Was fun. Then we formed a smaller group of about 6 for the second half, sharing the work, until same train passed us, and we just managed to hang on again. Was quite intense riding, and a bit hairy passing the slower riders in a large group.

Was an enjoyable day, we did a slowish run until the 30 odd mile stop, but had enough in reserve to pick up the pace from then on, echo the thoughts of eat and drink plenty,

Ian, you will find that riding in a group/following another wheel really helps the miles pass, for me its one of the best things about organized rides.

Basic good manners never goes amiss either!

Today I dragged another rider along into a headwind for about 2-3 miles as he just on and didn't even let on to me that he was there. As the road kicked up he then did an out of the saddle effort to jump me!

I wasn't fussed about sharing the work with him, but it would have been nice to be thanked for the help I gave him to get a good time. In fact it would have been nice if he had said hello as he cycled past.
