First Sportive and first 30miler!

After getting my bike 4 weeks ago, today was a day of two firsts for me, as it was my first sportive/organised ride, which was the Jodrell Bank Sportive, and should have been a 25 mile ride, haing previously ridden 15 miles as my longest distance. However, due to missing a turn, it unintentionally became my first 30 mile ride!

The small group I was riding with we're overtaken by a large group, so we followed them assuming they were on the sportive... 2.5 miles later and not seeing any signs for the route, the penny dropped, so around we turned and picked up the route again.

Had nothing in my legs for a short steep climb, so bailed out and walked half of it... But got a burst of energy about a mile from the finish and pushed on, raising my speed and using the big cog for a change. It all felt a bit emotional at the end, having realised I'd doubled my previous distance and finishing my first event

Now, when's the next one

Congratulations!

Some people question if its worth paying to ride in an event. I often feel the event wouldnt be worth it if it wasnt for the people around that encourage you to do better. I have only done a few events, but I always seem to push for a longer distance or increase in speed when I do.
Now, when's the next one

I think the Kilo to go "Chesire cat" is the next local one, but there are loads if you dont mind travelling to them...

As you have found out this lark is more addictive than crack (not that I've tried it). You have also found out one of the cardinal rules. Never assume every other cyclist (or group) is on the same ride. You should also add a caveat to that. Even if they are on the same ride never assume they know where they are going even if they are all wearing all the latest gear.

Well done on your 30 miles

Congratulations and well done, hope the legs don't ache too much tomorrow. I'm can ride approx. 20 miles or so on my own at the moment but considereing entering a charity ride in May for the Douglas Macmillan in Stoke which is 50 miles (110 mile route far too much) so I have two months to up my mileage to 50.

Legs feel fine so far, which I'm quite surprised about. Planning a short gym session on a spin bike tomorrow during my lunch hour just to keep them loose

Looking to do 25 miles next weekend with some shorter ones in the week, then the following weekend try for 35... Build it slowly, rather than doubling distances, even if done unintentionally.
