Had enough of yesteryears cup and cone setups, so would be grateful for sealed unit suggestions.
Looking for something to fit a JIS square taper on a standard british shell and approximatelu 120mm in length.
I am thinking about some of the sturdier Shimano jobs and welcome everyones opinions.
Thank you

Shimano UN54/55 with the alloy locking cup. Only about £15. Just get 68/73mm BB shell and the same axel width as you have now of 120mm.

Simple as that. I switched as soon as they came out, about 20 years ago !!!!

Make sure it has the alloy cup

As above you cant go wrong with the shimano ones, both plastic an alloy lockrings are alright but if you do go plastic be careful installing it

....Halfords are good for BB's, currently doing UN26 for £6.47 (cheaper still if you take the 3 for 2 offer). Have also used their own VP brand BB's - little dearer, but with metal cups both sides. Halfords do get a lot of flack, but found them unbeatable on price for certain parts.

Also worth noting, if it's an old Raleigh, you're stuffed! They use 26TPI instead of the standard 24TPI, and French and Italian frames are also peculiar in the BB area I believe............

Any Hollowtech compatible BB will do, as long as you match it with a Shimano axle. Which one you choose from the many aftermarket models depends on the depth of your pockets. Most important in determining their lifespan is fitting and preloading them properly. If you want to change to HT you'll need to buy a new chainset, and most deals include a bottom bracket anyway.

The Community Chest card says:

Do not pass go. Go directly to Hollowtech.
Why would that advice suit the op? A replacement BB was sought not a full chainset... I'd imagine the Shimano UN55 is the square taper BB of choice (it's full metal rather compared to the UN26 which has a plastic ring). if you need a BB tool, Halfords sell one for £9; it's not so cheap as is but is included in the 3 for 2 offer.
