I'm looking to get my first road bike soon. I'm interested in getting a Giant Defy 4 2010.

Is this a safe choice for a first road bike? Or should I choose something else and save for a future upgrade when I have more experience?

It's not bad, I'd be happy with one as my first road bike you get the same frame as all the other 'Defy' range, but with some cheaper components. Use it regularly, and you'll figure out for yourself what things you think need to be improved, then save up some money with a view to replacing it in a year or two with a bike that suits you, and has the components that you want.

Had one of these for a year, good solid bike, when i bought it i thought it was the bee's knee's, but after some time, i realised it's very heavy, if your going to upgrade it start with the wheels as these are one of the heaviest parts on the bike, but as i say it's a good solid bike and will serve you well if looked after properly.

thanks! I learned that as long as the frame is a solid good one it will last and all the other components will need to be replaced one day due to upgrade, wear, etc.

I am a bit confused about the ideal size for myself.

Halfords website says that I should go for a large bike (frame size between 20'' and 21''). I am 6' 1.0'' heigh and 12st 9lb.

Would a 19 inches Defy 4 be ideal? Or should I definitely go for 20'' or 21''?

cheers

I ride 19 inch and 19.5 inch, centre to centre (54cm, 55cm according to the manufacturers 21 inch) bikes and I'm only 5 foot, 9.25 inch I'd guess you definitely need at least the 20 or 21 inch, try them out and see what feels best for you. There's lots of fit systems but the last time I used one it was this one online

You need to try. I am 6' and ride a medium Defy frame, but I have got short arms and body and so the reach (the top tube length?) on a large was a struggle for me, especially as I hadn't ridden on drops before

I'm 6 foot 1 and got a large. Was a lovely bike.
What sort of deal are you getting? There are some pretty good offers around at the moment with the new models on the horizon.
