Got my first bike since I was a teenager this morning, took it home and made sure seat was in correct position etc. Then I put my gear on and went out. I only did about 4 miles but it was good enough to see where my bike fitness is at and if the bike had any noticeable faults. It felt amazing! I honestly think i must have been going about 25mph (probably over exaggerating) as cars only just overtook me! Can't believe how fast these bikes go. I am now already wanting to go back out! One step at a time though...

Well done - keep us up to speed with how you are doing in the Newbies Progress Thread please - you'll find all sorts of friendly peeps in there; some stretch the definition of Newbie a bit and some are definite Newbies and there's a lot of in-betweeners too. Great place for advice and general motivation type stuff!

Speaking of steps, a smart phone or Garmin for data acquisition, Strava will soon follow to show off you progress, some thinner tyres and fast lycra to push those segments and I'm sure there is a thread here somewhere spanning a few good pages with essential kit you must have

The more miles you do, the more things you think you will need. Try to give these impulses a week to cool down, and then deliberately choose what can help you the most. Cycling in these times of Austerity/Recession/Depression can be daunting. As for the hills, they can be scary at first, but soon you'll be rolling down them with more speed and accessories
