First proper ride

Did my first real off road ride with the Whyte 905 today. Set off from Staveley and did the Garburn Pass in the southern lakes. It's probably more a full suspension type route and not one to ride alone as it's middle of nowhere with zero phone signal so an accident would be a disaster. Still, I'm glad I did it and with winter coming it's probably last chance this year before it's unrideable.
The bike was brilliant, it never lost traction, except when my crap riding caused it to, it handled everything thrown at it, and was quick in the more flatter surfaces descents and climbs. Grass, mud, rock, sheep shoot, it was a joy on them all.
Solid brakes even in heavy rain and the 20th friggin water splash, numerous streams but it still brakes exceptionally especially on steep rocky descents.
It's a much better bike than I am rider but gives a lot of confidence so I'm sure I will get better each ride.
Looking for a hilly but more cross country course to use as a regular ride in the lakes area throughout winter as like I said that Garburn pass could be treacherous in icy winter and alone. Maybe I need to find a local MTB club too :okay: Around 14 mile done with 1800 feet ascent

Great scenery up in the lakes. Take it easy if you are riding alone and make sure have a plan if anything goes wrong.

Looks ace - wouldn't fancy riding those rocky bits in the ice though!

Both good points. Unfortunately I moved from Yorkshire up here and with working away a lot and rest of time spent with family I don't know anyone with same interest in two wheels up here. Plus I ride mostly during week when I'm home rather than weekends. Another reason I'm looking for more cross country routes for winter

Apologies as I don't want to detract from your thread. I'm not knocking you and will ride in remote parts of the peaks by myself. It has been brought home to me after a video that was going round Faceache last night of a pro DH racer having a very innocuous crash which left him in a postion of having 10 minutes to live. The ground he was riding on was something you would expect a 7+ year old having no problem riding. He wouldn't be here if it wasn't for his riding companions. A bit morbid I know but its really made me think.

Ironic really, the wife wanted me off road as the roads get more unsafe. Thanks Jody for taking the time to post about this and I agree entirely. I'm going to stay with the grizedale trails etc. As there is much more safety measures in the trail centres when riding alone.
