Hi shane.

You are not really going to get a bike for riding on road and off road that is going to be the best on either.
If you want to ride off road, you need and off road bike, and vice versa. You could ride a MTB with slick tyres on the road which works fine, but its not a roadbike. Roadbikes do not work off road ime.
So if you go with the versatile MTB, i would suggest a GT avalanche which will be great for riding off road, and will cope with the roads.

A hybrid would probably be best but lets face it no 14 yr old is going to be seen dead on one.

Go for a MTB. The less 'gadgets' it has the better. At £250 you don't want full suspension, disc brakes etc. At this sort of price range they wont work correctly.

Looks like a load of rubbish to me.
Some sort of kids jump bike.

As above avoid as many gizmos / gadgets as you can. At £250 you probably don't even want front suspension, although you'll be hard pressed to find any bikes without it.

If you don't intend to ride off-road very regularly a set of slick tyres will dramatically increase the speed of the bike on the road.

You would be well advised going to a bike shop and discussing your needs with them. If you're buying a new bike ask about discount/deals on the following
helmet
pump
tools/multi-tool
cycling shorts

For the price you mention have a look at this

Last year's model is always cheaper.

Also you need to understand that it will not be long before you'll be wanting to sell this bike.....at your age you're gonna grow some more. Therefore it is ALWAYS best to buy a bike that WILL sell. My advice is get last year's model in a popular brand, Trek, Giant, Specialized or similar (NOT Raleigh...very uncool for selling on...sadly) that has front suspension...you'll enjoy the bike and it'll be "cool" enough for someone else to want to buy.

I agree with Clavicle. My flatmate commutes a 16 mile round trip on a Spesh Hardrock every day (all on road). He swears by it.

Good luck!
