Just had my first off, got caught on some slippy stuff and got sucked into a sunken (and flooded) verge and then spat back out onto the road (luckily it was a quiet country road). I've lost a bit of "bark" but nothing serious. My feet came out of the cleats nicely, my helmet took a whack (glad i wore it now!).

Now the serious bit, my forks are carbon, there is no visable damage but should i get them checked anyway? (it's a trek 1.5 by the way, the green one). Also, my handlebar tape is a bit ripped, so that's a repair job...

Glad I took the day off now, and I only averaged 19.6 kph (it was mostly uphill)! i'm going to have a cup of tea!

I smacked a ped very hard and almost doubled the front wheel, two seperate LBS thought the carbon forks were fine and they have been so far

My layman opinion is that they're very strong and not to be worried about unless they take a hard knock as opposed to a general impact if that makes sense

someone will be along shortly to tell you that you wouldn;t have banged your head if you hadn't been wearing a helmet

I've left my tape a bit ragged, one less thing to worry about, it'll get torn again next time too

Well, it's two weeks since my "off" and I still haven't be able to get back on the bike! I had an xray on my elbow and then a few days after the incident a huge bruise appeared on a part of my arm untouched by the accident! That has now gone but I am left unable to grip with my right hand, which means I would feel unsafe on a bike!

And it's a really nice weather forecast over the weekend!

Bugger, that is a pain!!!. I'd get that bruise checked out if you are sure it was not caused by the impact.

Best wishes for your healing process.

Sympathies ... I tried riding my bike yesterday about 10 days after my off, and I can't brake or change gear and notice every vibration through the handlebars. My elbow was X-rayed twice and they declared it broken (although the actual crack didn't show up - just some shadow that indicated it was apparently). But other than that I have been told I can get back on the bike when I feel like it. I don't think that's a good thing to say to someone who loves cycling - I will probably attempt it earlier than they might expect. I am finding it very frustrating being off the bike.

I've a doc's appointment on Monday ... sounds like you should be doing the same.

surely the only way to check carbon is with x-ray/ultrasound equipment. anything bleedin obvious you can spot yourself
