Good stuff Jason. I know how you feel - I was feeling good about making it up a hill I'd had to walk up before, when a grey-haired chap whizzed by:blush:

Well done!!
you have to remember a group ride means they take turns at the front then draft a while which saves a lot of energy . i really enjoy my club runs when i get chance.

Bit pointless really ... like weightlifting up the gym and having someone helping you lift the weights.

I'm a 100% solo man, and i don't stand on the pedals going up hills either.

You may find changing down a gear and "spinning the legs faster" actually helps increase your average speed and reduces the aches and pains you feel after a ride.

Why is it pointless? theres more to cycling than just hammering along solo , having a ride with friends can be a lot of fun and you learn better bike handling if you can ride in a group a few feet from the wheel of the rider in front .
If you never stand on the pedals on hills you must have a really small granny ring or you live in an area where the hills are small, even the pro peleton have to stand on the pedals at times and if you have the right cadence and technique you can be working just as hard but going faster .

Please do not talk down cycling techniques because you prefer to ride solo , The OP said the club went past him easily and i only offered a reason why they could do so.

Well done Jason, I did my first 20 in Oct, and did my first 40 this weekend and that was with a significant boost lay off over xmas.
40 or 50 is just around the corner for you mate! I don't worry about people passing me, unless u r in the Olympics there is always gonna be someone faster, just concentrate on being better than the last time you rode.
