hi

I started riding last week and had my first fall today. I was riding up a short bit steep hill had changed gear and I suddenly went I lost my balance tried to put my foot out and missed the pavement. Luckily I'm only slightly bumped.

I think the problem was a late gear change.

Didn't let it stop me tho

I always back off the power a little when changing up a gear, it's better for you and your bike. Hope all is OK.

When you loose balance, you tip one way or the other, usually to the drive side. Don't put your foot down as quickly as possible. Tip over and stick your foot out and it will meet the ground in due time. Find some grass and practice that tippy feeling. If you do go right over, keep your hands on the bars. The natural reaction to stick your hand out will result in a broken shoulder blade. Tuck our head in and land on your upper arm and you will come out with nothing more than a bruise.
Change down earlier than you need to to maintain pedaling revs. Back off the power when you shift gears.

Thanks I will try to have a go at that. It's always important to learn the fall well.
