Well,
as I had got the new STI and all the cables on and tightened, the tape rewound on the bars (and quite pleased with myself that I adjusted everything very accurately without going to the local shop!), I got out my 2nd hand Diadoras and tried these clippy things on the street, right foot first, clipping and unclipping repeatedly, using my left foot when i couldn't unclip, until I felt confident.
Then both feet, and developed my technique for quick in-and-out movements on both. Happy, I set off on a country ride. Boy, do these things really make a difference on power and pedalling - I don't have to think about position or keeping my feet on pedals, I just turn my legs - simple! Does give extra power up hills.
After some time, I saw a big hill that I thought I should just walk up as I was tired, even though walking in these things is awkward. Unclipped my right foot to stop, then put my left down to unclip just as I braked, but put my weight on the left, overbalancing. My free right foot was useless, and I crashed onto the muck and gravel of a field gateway.
Didn't hurt too much, my left foot unclipped itself, and I just laughed!
Looked round to see if anyone noticed. Saw 6 pairs of eyes staring at me with disbelief... stupid cows!!
