Decided to try to take my cycling to the next level and bought a set of Time Atac Alium pedals from LBS. Had to go to one of the larger chains to get shoes- Shimano SH-MT70.

Not quite sure I understand the business about the cleat having an adjustment range (according to the insert 20 mm front and back; 5mm side to side) as there only appear to be two positions- ie the two holes forward and the two behind for the cleat mounting bolts. Perhaps this advice applies to different models of shoe? Anyhow used the front holes & the cleat seems to be positioned nicely over the ball of the foot.

Saturday was entertaining (for the kids at least) as I experienced no less than three clipless moments mucking around the drive. On Sunday resorted to pinching the kids' knee and elbow guards (kids embarrassed), but obviously my subconsciousness had absorbed the lessons overnight and no further falls. Enjoyable 8 mile round trip commute today with no problems.

Thinking back to gym spin classes I remembered exercises the instructors made us do using different pedalling techniques and wondered whether there is an optimum technique with clipless MTB pedals. For example, pressing straightdown with heel and/or drag pedal back. Other dimly remembered exercises included flexing or extending at ankles, or pointing toes upwards.

So is there an optimal pedalling technique for MTB clipless pedals?

Pedal as though you are trying to wipe dog muck of the ball of your foot
