After a tip from bainy16 I joined cycle supreme doncaster cycling club in the week.

With the weather we have had was very surprised to see that the club ride was on this week.

So anyway turned up at 8.45 for a 9.00 start, just 7 of us there (plus met up with another guy a few miles later)

Most of the guys were experienced cyclists, there was one other guy who had not ridden in a group before but had ridden for a lot longer than my 4 months.

In all the excitement I forgot to turn on my Garmin for the first mile:blush:

I found riding in a group quite strange to start with, it was hard to ride close to the person in front, you naturally want to leave a good gap but this negates the tow so you have to force yourself to ride closer and trust that the person in front knows what he is about.

The etiquette also took some getting used to, pointing out potholes, parked cars etc.

We kept the pace quite steady for the first 10 miles or so then some of the faster guys stretched their legs a bit on the last few miles before the cafe stop. At no point was anybody left, someone always stayed with the slowest rider.

The hardest part of the ride was the first 2 miles after the stop, having never stopped before I think my body thought we had finished so took some convincing to get going again.

After another 5 or 6 miles we put the hammer down a bit for a couple of miles but in general it was quite steady after the stop and a fairly relaxed pace back to the shop for tea and biscuits.

36.2 miles in 2:12:40 average of 16.4mph.

The club is very new only their third ride but have to say the guys were great very welcoming and tolerant of my complete inexperience.

I am on nights for the next couple of weekends but will definitely be back out with the guys as soon as I can.

All in all a very positive experience.

Very good report. Most interesting.
I'm so pleased it went well for you.
I wish you well in your future rides, you'll soon get the hang of the etiquette and it will become second nature to you.
Great stuff.

Well done and thanks for the report.
The main thing was that you enjoyed yourself. This time of year is hard enough with the cold, slippery conditions.Just imagine what the rides will be like in better weather.
Just a thought maybe some of our experianced club riders could start a thread about etiquette.

Sounds like you had an awesome time...I put on a thread a while ago that I would love to join a club but worried about being too slow etc (know I'm not the only one out there!). Will have to try and find one in the Northampton area...hopefully as welcoming as yours!! Jammy git...no really...I'm actually quite jealous but really glad you found a great club!

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Sounds like a fun ride !
The club i ride with is fantastic as well with varying levels of ability and rides to suit all riders and helpful members .
I shied off today, back roads were very dicey and even the main roads car were struggling friday evening on hills and today we have had more snow , i live on a bus route and even our road would be a snow stud bike or walk atm.
I am bouncing off the walls with no riding for a week so i am bouncing off the walls :banghead:

hello all. I am the other guy that simmi was talking about. The pace was quicker than I was used to but we all got around. The club is up and coming with various levels and experience of riders but don't let that stop anyone from trying it. We were introduced into the etiquette of group riding and there is a bloke called Mick who was brilliant with us. He was gauging the standard all the way round, marshalling traffic and generally protecting the group. At no time were we made to feel inferior to the other riders but conditions were wintery and we felt the cold. on return to the shop we were invited in and the owners flocked around us with bike stands and told us to help our selves to drinks and biscuits. can't wait till the summer comes to really get out but till then next sunday will come first. For the first experience all i can say is get yourself to your local club and have a go. if its not for you then at least you tried. many thanks to our new club and lets get going from here.:bicycle:

Hi jimm55. to be honest it didn't bother me about riding that close but i did tend to be on the outside and tend to move slightly out of the group and look in front alot. The pace is quicker than when you go out on your own but if you tuck in behind the man in front it does actually give your legs abit of a rest and you don't realise that your keeping up, until you hit a hill then you soon know:laugh:
