Hello to you all,

Myself, the wife & son who 8 years all got a new bike last week.
Could not wait to get out for a ride so we looked on the internet and found a cycle ride from Selby to York.Nearly all cycle path and it said family friendly ride. So off we went to the start (Selby yorkshire).
The ride was about 30 miles round trip and what a Brill day out we had.
My son would of if given the chance done it twice as it didnt bother him a bit that distance, Me and the wife had problems with our rears after about 15 miles but still completed the trip.
Not a bad first ride out for beginners eh ?

Anyone starting out new to cycling like us I recommend this trip
you can even stop for some lunch at a pub half way between Selby and york. (Or like I did a Pint)
And what a friendly lot the other bikers that we passed along the way, nearly all nodded as we passed each other by.
Looking forward to going again.

Welcome to the world of cycling as a family event ... I'm sure you're backside will adapt the more time you spend in the saddle, but 30 miles is very good going for your first time out  .. congrats .. glad you all enjoyed your day out.

well done. A good mileage for an 8 yr old too!

In terms of getting into it, try and do little and often. Then gradually up the mileages. That will get your arse broken in gently!

Make sure your saddles are at the right height and angle and distance from the bars. You'll find lots on the www if you Google and also look at Sheldon Brown's website, which is full of useful info for budding cyclists. Get those tyres pumped up hard too and for a family a good track pump will make life easier. Topeak Joe Blow is a good one.

I know 30 miles seems inpressive, but I have to admit it was nearly all flat going.
thats why its ideal for beginners or familys.

30 miles is 30 miles, well done. And actually, it can be harder all on the flat, because you don't get to freewheel so much. The only reason to ride up a hill, I think, is the free ride down the other side!. It's great path though, I often go the other way (York - Selby - York). Did you look out for the planets along the way?

When you're up to some more road cycling, there are lots of nice quiet little roads around your way, and as you say mostly flat. Howden and Tadcaster are both do-able on mostly very quiet roads, and have cafes.
