First club ride thoughts.

These past few months haven't been too good on me, ever since I was sacked from my last job I have been out of work and only doing the very occasional temp work. As such I no longer commute, this combined with little motivation to ride for fun and the inevitable weight gain + inactivity over Christmas means I am out of form again.

Then yesterday I thought I'd at least make a start and do something about it. In Crewe we have one well-known local cycling club, the Crewe Clarion Wheelers. I'd known about them for quite some time even before I started riding the year before last. But TBH I never felt compelled to go join a club preferring instead to ride solo where I want and at my own pace.

But I felt I should give it a go and went down to the town centre in Crewe which is the starting point for their Sunday runs. There was only one bloke there when I arrived at 8:55 and over the next 10 minutes 5-6 more showed up. All seemed friendly and talked about where we would be riding toady, it was generally agreed that a short ride towards Cholmondeley and back would be preferable.
We set off at a gentle pace averaging around 18mph on Nantwich Road heading towards Nantwich. I was taking it relatively easy at the back of the group in the slipstream chatting to one of the blokes. I did notice that for the majority of the ride, regardless of lane width, that the group cycled two-abreast. Not that I have anything against that sort of road positioning it just seemed a little weird to be taking up half a lane all of the time. It did inevitably attract a few bips of the horn from one motorist who tried to pass approaching a pinch point but other than that the ride was uneventful.

I was pleased to see that even with my Christmas-weakened legs I was still keeping up well with the rest of them. Then I remembered about the slipstream and felt a little deflated
Since I have never tried to ride in a group before I was slightly nervous about getting close to the rear wheel of the guy in front, all of this despite being constantly encouraged to get as close as possible.
The ride was gentle until the last 10 miles when everyone started breaking away and I was told that the pace would quicken to as fast as you can go without anyone waiting for you. I am not sure if this is typical of the Sunday rides but it certainly did give me a work out for the last part.

The ride ended up being just over 25 miles and I completed that within 1hr 30 mins which is fairly good for me. There is a ride every Sunday and I'll hopefully be doing a supposedly longer ride (70 miles) in a week's time. I enjoyed the ride but found the new experience of riding with someone else strange, it will take a few rides to help me decide whether or not club riding is really for me.

I chickened out of my club run today but its something to do with getting to bed at 3:30 am and being slightly hung over.

Well done , keep it up !

No club run for me this week as mini ck ~2 arrived Wednesday but i hope to be back asap.We have a slow, medium and fast group club runs on a sunday, the medium group averages around 17 mph for a 60 -70 miler and the fast boys are averaging 19-20 mph for a similar distance.I had just tried to move up to the fast group in the Autumn but due to a chest infection and now parental duties my cycling has taken a back seat so i am going back to the medium pace group.I will be commuting again from next week when i go back to work ( on paternity leave atm ) and currently just hammering the exercise bike for 1/2 a hour day.

The club run is the highlight of my week as i get to talk to people with similar interests and i get some milage in which i do not get chance for in the week .I certainly miss it

Firstly, 18 mph is a brisk pace! Secondly, for, say 12 cyclists in a group: singled up the line is 12 bikes long, doubled it is 6. The motorist should allow enough room when passing, which means crossing the centre line even if cycling singly. 12 bikes long is a very long bit of road for the car to get clear. The Highway Code allows for cycling two abreast except for busy narrow roads.

Im part of my Uni cycling club, but I've always been to scared to go on a club ride with them!
My bike is a bit poo, its a Decathlon, it gets the job done but its nothing special. Its still my first road bike, I'd love something better but I just cant afford it on a student budget. I know at least two of them are serious cyclists taking part in all sorts of events, and as a result I'm a bit self conscious about my bike (stupid, I know. Especially considering the slow ride is literally for everyone, most people turn up on mountain bikes on a sunny day!)

To add to that, Im not confident in my own ability at all. I'll happily cycle 30/40 miles by my self just to kill some time, aiming for speeds of around 13mph to 15mph. Problem is I generally have one or two 10 minute rests during the ride. Im not entirely sure I'd be able to keep up with the speeds they do on club rides, especially if its a ride like OPs club
Mind you, I guess I could just get to the end of the pack and ride the slipstream, that should make it considerably easier right?

Its really irritating me that I've not been on a ride yet, I keep meaning to at least give it a try!
I love cycling with other people, I had great fun today cycling home with another commuter chatting away with him!
