I was supposed to spend all day indoors writing an essay on anarchism, however after my new shoes arrived yesterday wiggles dhb R2.0C which were £45 at the weekend!
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-r20c-carbon-road-cycling-shoe/
And then this morning my cleats and pedals turned up http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270949791...WNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_666wt_905 , (I think I've landed a bargain to get full carbon shoes, 105 pedals and cleats all new for under £90).

Well the weather was so beautiful that I just couldn't resist the urge to head out and give them a try. Given that I'm a broke student I have converted to road cycling on a budget, thus ruling out affording any sort of bike fitting and have instead decided to read a lot of guides/Sheldon Brown and do a lot of fettling. So I read a few guides on installing cleats and getting used to using them, all of which told me at some point I will fall over!

Having installed the pedals and cleats I headed out for a beautiful 40 miles in the sunshine, I stopped a total of three times to adjust the cleats and once to slacken off the straps on my shoes slightly, but by the end of my ride I was very happy with the feel of my shoes and am confident I purchased the right size. I may try some Specialized insoles though as before I slackened off the straps the bottom of the outside of my feet were just starting to ache; reinforcing my thoughts that I may have high arches.

I also very nearly had my clip-less moment, riding past a long stretch of parked cars a lady in a people carrier decided not to wait and drive at me, forcing me to duck in. Forgetting I was attached to the pedals I started to track stand, but annoyingly other traffic then started to follow her, thankfully though I managed to clip out just before making a tit of myself. The SPD SLs may have had one positive on the incident however, as normally I would have shouted something/maybe even just stop in the road and wait for her to reverse, but my lack of confidence and diverted attention made me do neither of these and wait it out like a polite/timid cyclist.

I now can't wait to get this essay finished so I can get out there and enjoy more of the amazing weather, and I'm wondering if that will be my only clip-less moment? My advice to anyone on a budget concerned about moving over to clip-less would be to do it. I was umming and ahhing for ages but decided upon Wiggle as if I'd ordered the wrong size they would have been easy to change as opposed to ebay from where I buy most of my bike parts on the cheap.

You'll get there, the only time clipless moments occur are on the sharp stops where silly vehicles decide to pull up and hook

It will happen three times before your brain learns. Each time it happens will be when you are distracted by a hazard.

I've been clip-less for about 5 years and used to scoff at people saying that they had fallen off as I'd always found it second nature to twist off the pedals as I stopped

Last weekend I was out with the missus and the kids and slowed right down to look after my shoulder to see where they were and promptly went down like a sack of spuds - it wasn't half painful !

Thanks for the advice guys. I agree that it'll be the unexpected stops that'll catch me off guard as I was unclipping well before most junctions.

Will I just get better at unclipping last minute, like from a track stand if I can't keep it going long enough, or is that always tricky? As there were quite a few junctions where I needn't have stopped but just slowed down a lot, but because I unclipped I ended up faffing around in the middle of the road.

I have to say the feeling of pedaling with one foot is really odd, I have to keep telling myself to pull up.

Speaking to a friend at work (all I talk about is cycling), he suggested I get "floating" cleats as they are better for your knees? Said it allows a little bit of play so your knee/foot can find it's natural position through the rotation?????

You'll just end up doing it without even thinking. Until you fall off like me and then get paranoid !
