Hi group,i need some advice on how you go about doing your very First cleaning of a new chain.Let me be clear,im refering to wether or not to degrease the factory lube and relube or wipe with a damp cloth and then relube thus leaving the factory grease in situ.I have read various things saying never remove factory grease/always remove factory grease etc.

Whats your thoughts guys and gals?

if you follow the method as on sheldon's page using the correct solvents and make sure you relube afterwards then you can't go far wrong.

Search this forum for the Mickle mthod. As good as any.

Be forewarned BTW. This thread will probably run and run and run...

well, you don't have to do it weekly. Just do it now, then you probably won't need to do it again for about another year.
Use the 'mickle method' in between times - basically wipe, oil, wipe, oil, wipe, oil.
But just do make sure you do the sheldon's method sometime soon, ideally today.

Mickle method only, unless you like faffing about with stuff.

Bloody hell! I've never gone to anywhere near that trouble cleaning my motorbike chains and they've got 150 bhp running through them. Would seem a tad OTT ....

i swear i'll get someone to actually do that one day...

but don't you do this?????

And I quote from the great man himself :

Serious cyclists, who value performance and are willing to take the time to do a job correctly use grease, but, of course, disassembly is required to access the surfaces that need to be greased.
