As a training ride for JOGLE, myself and 2 friends did our first century (105 miles) today, and what an experience it was! Weather was perfect, if a little cold, for our 8am start and we covered the first 30 miles to Oxford in under 2 hours. Then we continued to the White Horse at Uffington, and up a 10% hill in Ashbury, which I strangely enjoyed (there really is something wrong with me now)
It was after 80 miles that it all went a little "pear shaped" shall we say. It was 2 oclock and we were confident about making 4pm for the finish, avoiding high traffic and dark. So we stopped for a 10 minute biscuit stop....
Shortly after this one of us got a fairly average puncture, and 15 minutes later we were on our way again. Quite literally 20 seconds later, he got a different, and now major puncture, a proper "new tube" job. Again we were on our way, averaging a whopping 1mph for the last 30mins!
Then, we had to find our way through Newbury, and then my gears started playing up. We tried to keep the speed up and get back before nightfall. Lights on, it got dark when....pssssssssss....yep....my tire. By this point I was tired, hungry and not willing to fix it, so we ended up walking the last 3.75 miles.
All good fun? Yeah I enjoyed it Onto the next one...but back to school tomorrow
